Architecture of Longing
Sage Jeehee Kang & Minjung Lee
Curated by Carson Woś
September 3–5 & September 17–October 24, 2026

Architecture of Longing marks the culmination of the second edition of In Practice, Picture Theory’s artistresidency program, featuring artists Minjung Lee and Sage Jee Hee Kang. Developed over the course of the summer, the residency provides artists with dedicated time and space to develop new work alongside an ongoing program of studio visits, critical dialogue, and exchange with invited curators, artists and arts professionals.

Bringing together new bodies of work by Kang and Lee, Architecture of Longing curated by Carson Woś considers how memory, place, and personal history shape our understanding of self. Both artists examine the distancebetween experience and recollection, using material and spatial reconstruction as a means of navigating displacement, cultural translation, and belonging.

Kang draws upon family photographs, inherited histories, and traditional Korean hanji paper to explore lineage and the ways personal and generational memory are carried forward. Lee reconstructs fragments of familiar interiors—baseboards, electrical outlets, architectural thresholds, and other seemingly ordinary details—to create psychologically charged spaces suspended between memory and physical reality.

Together, their works consider the ways we reconstruct places, histories, and relationships that can no longer be fully accessed, asking what remains when distance—geographic, temporal, or emotional—separates us from what once felt familiar.

Sage Jeehee Kang (b.1984) is a visual artist residing in New York with her husband and two sons. Her recent body of work consists of an exploration into the environments and materiality of
transience, viewed through the lens of her identity as part of the Korean diaspora. Originating from a personal diasporic perspective, her work expands into spiritual inquiries directed at all human beings in their finitude. While her practice primarily centers on painting and drawing, she also incorporates mixed media. Sage received her MFA in Visual Arts from School of Visual Arts in 2014 and her BFA
in Fashion Design from Dong-Duk Women’s University in South Korea.

Minjung Lee (b.1984) is a South Korean artist based in Brooklyn, New York. She creates theatrical trompe l’oeil sculptures to examine the blurred boundary between the physical world and the dimension of the mind. Her work seeks to locate an authentic sense of self roaming between the realms
of memory and amnesia, dreaming and waking, as she reclaims hand drawing at the center of her
practice–an ancient human instinct to search and remember. She earned her BFA in Sculpture from Seoul National University, Seoul, and her MFA in Sculpture from Slade School of Fine Art, UCL,
London. She has had solo exhibitions at Ortega y Gasset Projects, Brooklyn, Brooklyn Art Cluster, Brooklyn and Alternative Space Noon, Suwon, Korea. She attended Joshua Tree Highlands
Residency. Her work has been exhibited in Massachusetts, New Jersey, London, and Seoul,
and featured in Maake Magazine, Sand Journal, Young Space Views and Manifest International
Drawing Annual.
